SW-VAWT 6/4800

The Solwind Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) is being designed to start producing power at a wind speed of only 4.8 km and produce approx. 4800 watts at a wind speeds of 9.6 km. It is quiet in operation and due to the design, the blades do not cause coning noise that occurs with conventional turbines when the blades pass close to the mast. The blades of the SW 6/4800 series wind turbine’s are always at the same set distance from the mast and are made from fibreglass and lightweight aluminium making them easy to handle.

At the present ‘Off the shelf’ generators are being used with the SW 6/4800 series. Solwind Ltd. are currently designing a magnetic levitation alternator, specifically for that it has only one moving part, keeping the wearing components to a minimum, and so prolongs the longevity of the wind turbine.

At high wind speeds the SW 6/4800 series will start to stall, causing the machine to slow down at around 80 km and to stop at approximately 120-km wind speed. In the stalled mode the SW 6/4800 series will automatically align itself to the least line of resistance to the wind, in doing so it reduces the mast stress.

The DARRIEUS design lends itself to taking wind from any direction, i.e.. Spoilt wind or gusty wind and will be made so that it is electrically started when the wind speed reaches the lowest end of the operating scale at approximately 4.8 km.

Generator Multi Pole induction generator. Output voltage: 3 Phase 415 volt AC. 3 Phase Rectifier pack with regulator to suit end user voltage, 

e.g.: 12 / 24 / 48 / 120 / 240 volts DC or any voltage required.

Note: The generator is mounted base mounted (At the foot of the mast) and requires no slipring assembly, no dolly bearing assembly, no brush assembly and no power cables running up the mast.

The Solwind Ltd. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is due to be released in early 2001 following final field-testing

Mast design and construction is under review at this time. A complete self-contained Power generation system is being designed to be accommodated within the base of the mast. This will mean that only the 230/415V AC will need to be connected to the end user via underground or poled cable. This mast requires no guide wires and provides a smaller ground footprint than the stayed single pole mast assembly stated over. (See Photo below).

The towers we have designed are made for a wind turbine, but can also be used for other applications where a stable and strong mast is needed to protect your investment, be it a wind turbine or a TV or Radio antennae etc.

Our masts are made in New Zealand and are constructed from high tensile steel, and come in standard lengths of 6.5 metres for easy handling.
